JOHN PEVETO DEAD NEXT OLDEST CITIZEN IN ORANGE COUNTY THREE QUARTERS OF A CENTURY
At Age of 89 Years Death Came Unexpectedly-He Was Apparently in Good Health. Special to the Enterprise, Orange, Jan. 1910.
Death claimed another one of the pioneers of Orange county last night, John Peveto, who died at his home near Terry, in the central part of the county. Deceased was born in Plaquemine parish, La., Feb. 11, 1821, and came to Orange county when a lad. He lived for a while in Johnson's Bayou, where he married. In 1884 he moved again to this county and has lived here continuously ever since. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and a gallant follower
of Lee in the civil war. He was the oldest man in Orange county, except John Wilson and Chas. Saxton (t is a typo should be Saxon) with whom he has lived some eighty years.
Deceased is survived by his wife and seven children. The children are; Jim Peveto of Duncan's Woods, Mrs. Isabell Griffith of Johnson's Bayou; Jesse Peveto of Orange; Mrs. Sam Hubert of West Orange; A. B. Peveto of Orange; Preston Peveto of Beaumont; and Archie Peveto of Terry. All of the children with the exception of the last named are married and have large families.
The remains will be interred in the Duncan's Woods cemetery tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, the funeral service being conducted by Rev. M. Stephenson.
