Elephant Killed in Orange

"Wild circus elephant went on rampage. The elephant before it was shot to death destroyed a considerable amount of property. Some claim that Sheriff J.W. Helton shot the final blow that killed the elephant. Others claim that Edward Brown, Jr. did it. The animal had been shot over a hundred times. The picture was taken in West Orange across from Schulman's. The only one identified is Bonnie Gunstream who is standing on top of the elephant in cap and overhauls."

Note: Elaine Stone's uncle, Willard Stimpson Wilson, is the boy with a cap peeking from behind the boy in the white shirt.

Note from Dr. Howard C. Williams: The elephant was named Floto. He escaped Nov 18, 1921 and was killed Nov 19, 1921 in Bruner addition (other side Adams Bayou). The circus was Sells Floto Circus, set up on lots Front at 8th.
