Clarence Gatemouth Brown

Gatemouth Brown, a native of Orange who died here at age 81 from health complications in 2005, may have a stretch of road named after him in Louisiana. A stretch of U.S. 11 from the southern boundary of Slidell to Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish, will be designated the Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Memorial Highway if state Rep. A.G. Crowe gets his way. Published reports say without objection, the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works on Thursday unanimously approved Crowe's House Concurrent Resolution 18, which calls on the state highway department to rename U.S. 11 from Spartan Drive to Lake Pontchartrain and hang road signs bearing the Grammy-winning musician's name. The resolution needs only the final approval of the Senate before it goes to the department. No opposition is expected. Brown called Slidell his home, spending 22 years of his life there while playing in various fundraisers to raise money for civic and charitable causes.
